HEALTH PROBLEMS IN RABBITS
DIARRHOEA
Diarrhoea is usually caused by another illness but can also be caused by incorrect diet, stress, cold and draughts.
SYMPTOMS
-
liquid or very runny faeces
-
wet, dirty bottom
PREVENTION/TREATMENT
If diarrhoea persists for more than 1 to 2 hours, consult your vet.
Bath your rabbit's bottom with warm, soapy water, dry thoroughly and keep your rabbit warm.
Feed plenty of hay and fresh water, remove dry food and vegetables.
When diarrhoea has been successfully stopped and rabbit is eating hay, you can slowly begin to re-instate an eating routine. Add pellets, but do not add too fast or diarrhoea may start all over again.
-
always feed plenty of hay
-
never make sudden feed changes
-
limit stress for younger rabbits
-
make sure babies are drinking when they transfer from mother’s milk to solid food
