HEALTH PROBLEMS IN RABBITS

SNUFFLES

Snuffles is a general term for respiratory diseases in rabbits.

Some of these signs are very similar to those that humans develop with common infections such as colds and flu. Rabbits have a small chest cavity, they breathe through their nose and so it must be noted that it is very serious if a rabbit must resort to mouth breathing.

SYMPTOMS

  • discharges from the eyes

  • discharges from the nose

  • sneezing

  • coughing

  • Noisy breathing

  • difficulty breathing

A visit to the vets is required if any of the above syptoms is seen as left untreated death could result.

CAUSES

The main infectious agents that may be involved are:

  • Pasteurella

  • Staphylococcus

  • and Bordatella

Due to this bacterium being so highly contagious, it is easy for rabbits to spread the infection to one another so they must be isolated. While some rabbits are immune to this bacterium, there is still a large amount that are not.

TREATMENT

Snuffles is generally treated with antibiotics for 14-30 days.

CARE/PREVENTION

Good hygiene, diet, comfortable surroundings and avoidance of stress is the best prevention.
