HEALTH PROBLEMS IN RABBITS
E.COLI
E. Coli (Escherichia Coli) in rabbits can end up resulting in death.

SYMPTOMS
Colibacillosis is charactererized by severe diarrhea and it is often caused by Escherichia Coli.
This disease can be seen in two forms depending on the rabbits age.
-
Newborn rabbits may exhibit a yellowish diarrhea - in newborns, this condition is often fatal and can affect the entire litter.
-
In weaned rabbits, the intestines may fill with fluid and hemorrhages may surfaces.
In the case of weaned rabbits, the disease is typically fatal within 2 weeks. If the rabbit survives, it is likely to be stunted.

TREATMENT
Treatment is not often successful but, in mild cases, antibiotics may help.
AWARENESS
ADULTS/CHILDREN can catch E.Coli.

E. Coli is a bacterium that lives in the gut of animals, including cattle, sheep, deer and goats. It can also be carried by pets and wild birds. Simply carrying the bacterium will not normally cause an animal any harm or illness, but if contacted by humans, the toxins it produces can cause illness ranging from diarrhoea to kidney failure. In some case the illness can be fatal. Young children and the elderly at the greatest risk.
Children's farms, wildlife parks and organisers of outdoor events are all expected to follow detailed guidance over handwashing facilities.
Infection can result from exposure to bacteria from animals or animal faeces and then eating, drinking or smoking without first thoroughly washing your hands.
